A pet shares the daily life of more than half of French households. Dog, cat, bird, or reptile, each species has specific dietary, health, and behavioral needs. Knowing these needs before adoption, and then adjusting them throughout the animal’s life, is the foundation of a successful cohabitation.

Pet Regulations: What Changes in 2026

The legal framework surrounding pets has undergone two major changes in a few weeks. Ignoring them exposes one to direct financial penalties or administrative difficulties when traveling.

Since August 5, 2026, the sale of dogs and cats in pet shops is penalized. Fines can reach 1,500 euros per animal, and 3,000 euros in case of recidivism. The mere display of animals visible from public roads is also subject to this measure, according to the Ministry of Agriculture.

A few weeks later, the regulation (EU) 2026/1818 came into effect on August 30, 2026. For the first time, the European Union sets common rules on the welfare and traceability of dogs and cats. General application is scheduled to start on August 31, 2028, with a timeline extending until 2036 for certain individual holders.

This regulation requires mandatory electronic identification and registration in interoperable national databases. For any owner traveling with their pet within the EU, this harmonization will simplify procedures, provided they anticipate compliance with the microchip.

Before adopting or buying an animal, it is possible to consult the Espace Animaux website to discover detailed sheets by species and breed, which helps check compatibility with one’s lifestyle.

Pet Nutrition: Adjusting the Ration to the Species

Food represents the primary expense and the main health factor for a pet. Dietary errors can lead to obesity, kidney issues, or deficiencies, sometimes silently for months.

Dog and Cat: Two Very Different Metabolisms

The cat is a strict carnivore. Its body does not synthesize taurine or certain fatty acids, which it must find in its daily ration. Dog food, even of good quality, does not meet these needs.

The dog, an opportunistic omnivore, tolerates a more varied diet. However, its ration must be calibrated according to its breed, age, and activity level. An active shepherd dog and a sedentary bulldog do not have the same recommended energy intakes.

Birds and Small Mammals: Common Pitfalls

Seeds alone are not enough for a parrot or a budgerigar. These birds need fresh fruits, vegetables, and sometimes calcium supplements, especially during molting.

For rabbits, hay should form the basis of their diet, not a supplement. A rabbit primarily fed pellets often develops dental problems related to the lack of natural wear on its teeth.

  • Cat: animal proteins in the first position on the label, the lowest possible carbohydrate content, guaranteed taurine supply.
  • Dog: protein/fat ratio suitable for size, watch out for overly rich foods for breeds prone to stomach torsion.
  • Rabbit: unlimited hay, daily fresh greens, limited pellets.
  • Birds: seed mix suitable for the species, fresh fruits and vegetables several times a week.

Animal Behavior: Decoding Signals Before They Become Problems

An animal that destroys, bites, or hides is not being capricious. It expresses discomfort, the cause of which is often identifiable, provided one knows how to read the signals in advance.

In dogs, excessive licking of the paws may indicate chronic stress, an allergy, or joint pain. Waiting for the behavior to settle for weeks complicates management.

The cat communicates through subtle variations in posture. Ears pinned back combined with a low tail signal fear, not aggression. Confusing the two leads to inappropriate responses that worsen the situation.

Enrichment of the Living Environment

Boredom is the most underestimated behavioral cause. An indoor cat without a scratching post, a high point, and an interactive toy frequently develops urinary marking or grooming alopecia.

For dogs, walking is not just about physical exercise. Free sniffing time contributes as much to well-being as the distance covered. Systematically shortening scent breaks deprives the animal of a major cognitive stimulation.

  • Offer at least two different types of toys in rotation (chewing, food search, interaction) to avoid habituation.
  • Create calm retreat areas, accessible at all times, especially in homes with children.
  • Observe changes in eating or sleeping routines: these are often the first indicators of physical or emotional discomfort.

Identification and Veterinary Follow-Up: Steps Not to Delay

Identification by microchip is mandatory in France for dogs and cats. With the European regulation 2026/1818, this obligation will be accompanied by increased interoperability between member countries, making it even more important to update contact details in the national file.

A move, a change of phone number: each modification must be reported to the I-CAD file. A lost animal whose chip points to old contact details has very little chance of being returned quickly.

Regarding veterinary follow-up, an annual check-up remains the minimum, even for an apparently healthy animal. Kidney issues in cats or heart problems in certain dog breeds can be detected through routine examinations well before visible symptoms appear.

Parasite prevention (fleas, ticks, worms) must be adapted to the animal’s lifestyle. An outdoor cat and a strictly indoor cat do not follow the same protocol. Discussing the schedule with the veterinarian avoids both overdosing and coverage gaps.

Caring for an animal rests on three concrete pillars: a species-calibrated diet, attentive reading of behaviors, and up-to-date administrative and health follow-up. The new French and European regulatory framework strengthens this requirement, with specific deadlines to monitor until 2028.
